Biography

Dr. Islam received her Ph.D. in economics from the West Virginia University in 2004, with specialties in urban and regional economics and public finance. She also has a Master of Social Science and a Bachelor of Social Science in Economics from the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh.

 

Dr. Islam joined the Department of Economics at BSU as an Assistant Professor in the fall of 2004. Before coming to the U.S. to pursue a Ph.D. degree, Dr. Islam served as a research assistant at the Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS) and later at Power and Participation Research Center (PPRC) in Dhaka , Bangladesh . She also writes commentaries on socio-economic issues for her hometown newspapers, The Daily Star and The New Age. 

 

Dr. Islam's primary research interests relate to regional economies and regional development issues, transportation investment and public finance. She has published an article on regional commodity flows and made several presentations at regional science conferences on highway capital investment and its impact on regional economic development, and the applicability of the Coase Theorem in dealing with large number externalities.
